The Stone Foxes CD Release Show at Cafe du Nord
Monday, July 26, 2010 at 3:35PM
alright, so we finally got this review of The Stone Foxes CD release show at Cafe du Nord up for you all. thanks for the emails prodding us to get it posted and sorry it took us so long (we've been crazy busy over here which is a good thing).
it's absolutely unanimous on our end and this review could be summed up in eight short words if needed - buy the CD and go see them live!
man, it's great to see a band like The Stone Foxes play live. the energy is through the roof and the crowd is having a blast. the musicianship of these players is downright tasty! there's the blues thing going on and definitely the rock thing going on but more than just that, The Stone Foxes bring something new to the mix. Something that (I think) is rare these days - genuine passion for their craft. the songwriting is quality and the tone that these guys get is sick. and take it from a true tone junkie like myself, it's killer!
I could go on but the important thing here is that you go and check them out yourselves. you will thank me later, i assure you.
some great pics of the show here.
The Stone Foxes is Shannon and Spence Koehler, Aaron Mort, and Avi Vincour

Great review of the new EP

Cover art for the new 6 song EP "If the Jay Trainer Band’s self-titled EP puts you in mind of the West coast psychedelic blues-rock explosion of the ‘60s, it’s not just because you got a stray ...whiff of incense on the wind. For one thing, singer/guitarist Trainer makes his home in the Bay Area, from whence came the likes of Santana, the Grateful Dead, Big Brother & The Holding Company et al, and he bears the undeniable influence of those artists. For another, the six-song EP, recorded in San Francisco, boasts a band that includes veteran horn man Mic Gillette, who has performed with the likes of Santana and the Big Brother-esque Cold Blood, bringing some serious old-school flavor to the mix. As a guitarist, Trainer has truly soaked up the sounds of the psychedelic ‘60s, using generous amounts of fuzz and wah-wah in his tone and embarking on instrumental excursions that show a marked preference for the path less traveled. But he’s adept at acoustic guitar as well, as he shows on ballad-oriented tunes like “Run” and the more low-key moments of the slowly building “Children (Of the Sun).” But don’t think of Trainer as a backwards-looking artist retreating to the sounds of an earlier era, think of him as a proud torchbearer, carrying the legacy into the future."

Foolproof Four and Morgan Nagler at Cafe du Nord
Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 2:13PM
So last night after the show at the de Young last night we cruised down to Cafe du Nord to check out Foolproof Four. These guys were excellent and I rarely cut and paste but this is such a great description of their sound (scroll down for video) - "Perhaps the best way to describe Foolproof Four is by way of an equation: multiply blues by jazz, add rock, divide by country, and subract half the band (as well as most of the drum kit). The results is an intimate sound with a big presence; guitarist/vocalist Noah Grant soars while drummer Dan Brennan dials in the groove, hollering periodically to round out the mix. Foolproof Four's original songs range from two-steps to ballads, and their interpretations of tunes by renowned artists often take even the most die-hard fans by surprise. Their self-produced EP offers a taste of what's to come, but don't rule anything out...these two are full of surprises!"
I also got the opportunity to check out Morgan Nagler (of The Whispertown 2000). Morgan was classic. I'm not sure how I would even describe her sound but I was really dig'n it. She had some sort of early Bob Dylan thing going on kinda but not really-ish. Let's just say I would definately go see her again. Scroll down to check her out for yourself.
